Course Overview

The course syllabus includes both basic (biology, anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology) and pharmaceutical, technological and legislative multidisciplinary expertise, necessary for the training of pharmacists, as experts in medicines and health products, able to work in the healthcare field as fundamental links between patients, doctors and the public healthcare system.

The graduate will be able to perform the following activities:

  • preparation of pharmaceutical forms;
  • manufacture and control of medicinal products;
  • storage and distribution of medicines at wholesale stage;
  • preparation, control, storage and distribution of medicines in pharmacies open to the public and in hospitals;
  • distribution of information and advice in the field of medicines and support for adherence to therapy;
  • distribution of information and advice related to the parapharmaceutical support in the selection and purchase of food supplements according to the user's needs and advice in choosing the appropriate "foods for a particular diet";
  • support for the purchase of medical devices and expertise in fulfilling the obligations of the supplementary prescription charged to the NHS;
  • advice in choosing cosmetics.

Educational Goals

Attendance at lectures and laboratories is mandatory. The degree programme aims to train professionals with knowledge that will enable them:

  • to play a role of health educators and participate in institutional campaigns conducted in collaboration with the public administration in various areas of health care;
  • to provide the patient with appropriate information, instructions, warnings, advice and assessments before and after the use of such drugs when dispensing pharmaceutical drugs.

In addition, Pharmacy graduates will possess the necessary learning abilities to continue their training at specialisation schools in the Pharmaceutical area by enrolling in Doctoral or 2nd Level Master programmes.
The Degree course in Pharmacy will also guarantee the acquisition of specific information on medical, dietetic and cosmetic products. The graduate in Pharmacy must be also able to use fluently both written and spoken English, in order to operate in an international context and to update themself. Lastly, the degree course provides for a period (6 months) of professional training in a pharmacy open to the public under the supervision of the professional Order and/or the local pharmaceutical service; the internship can be carried out in all the pharmacies of the national territory. Pharmacists are health professionals who, within their multidisciplinary technological and scientific competences, assist in meeting the objectives set out by the National Health Service, so as to provide an adequate response to society’s changing healthcare requirements.
